As with wine, there are many different factors that affect the flavor of your morning cup of coffee.
The first major distinction in coffee is between Robusta and Arabica beans. "Robusta" refers to more harsh, highly caffeinated beans, grown at a low altitude. The high caffeine content acts as a natural defense against insects, allowing it to thrive in harsh environments. "Arabica" beans are considered of better quality and grow at higher altitudes, and have less caffeine.
The region from which the coffee comes is the biggest defining factor in the taste. The soil, climate and altitude all have effects on the final taste of the coffee in your cup. There are four major regions from which coffee comes
1) Central America
2) South America
3) Indonesia
4) Africa
Other distinctions in the coffee world are the actual tastes in the cup. These include acidity, body, flavor, and aroma. At Portland Brew we are here to help all of our connoisseurs whether novice or experienced, find their favorite cup. |
